Urban transport involves the movement of people and goods to, from and within cities. It comprises the infrastructure, rolling stock and traffic flows. Urbanization has increased the reliance on private automobiles for transportation. Cars and trucks have displaced trains for the movement of goods and people, especially in the developed countries. These trends are being followed in the developing countries as well. Rapid expansion of cities and towns has made public transport uneconomical, resulting in high fuel consumption and increased levels of air pollution.
